Time to Explore

EXPLORE: (v.) Travel in or through (an unfamiliar country or area) in order to learn about or familiarize oneself with it.

What do you want to explore — a new career, calling, purpose or dream?

I awoke thinking about exploration this morning. Our family took a short hike through the woods yesterday and we’re planning some research trip adventures for later this autumn. I’m also stepping into uncharted territory with some new projects. So you could say trekking is forefront on my heart right now. This “traveling through the unfamiliar” that is to explore…

Do you ever feel like that in your faith walk? Like this girl in the photo, we gather gear for a journey and start out with optimism. But there are unforeseen trails, surprises, and growing-in-our-faith-moments that test us on this road with Jesus. I always thought of those things as negative — the obstacles to our faith.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” —Joshua 1:9

After a whirlwind few years when absolutely everything in our family’s world changed, what I once thought were the “worst” valley scenarios became some of the best faith moments we’ve had with Christ.

Because we were weak, we leaned on Him.

Because we couldn’t see far down the path, we followed behind His leading.

And because we couldn’t explore new corners of our faith alone, we sought and sought and sought God — in prayer, in the Word, in every breath.

I hope we’re not afraid to explore with God. I hope the obstacles don’t strike fear that cripples. Or doubt that diverts. Or sluggish dependency on ourselves. Exploring is a beautiful thing — something we all can and should do with our Creator. In fact, it’s the season for it. It’s time for a change. To own our faith walk with Jesus. To step out, be brave, look around the bend… and explore the new things He’s promised.

I’ll ask that first question again: What do you want to explore — a new career, calling, purpose or dream?

And now a second one: What’s stopping you?

Welcome autumn exploring! 🙂

  1. After taking Allen Arnold’s class at conference last week, I am exploring a deeper walk with Christ–always the wisest step for any journey–to determine where He is leading!
