A friend loves at all times,
And a brother is born for adversity.
—Proverbs 17:17 (NKJV)
“I’m not going anywhere.”
I sat back and looked at my friend’s text, in a bit of awe. Those words were exactly what I needed to hear, even though I didn’t know it until then.
February makes us think of hearts and flowers, and fairy tale romance… Those things are wonderful! But my heart sees that February 14th date on the calendar and instead, it starts drifting over to the memory of words like these. When I was really struggling and I reached out to a friend, she didn’t try to minimize what I was going through. She didn’t quote Scripture to me or try to offer advice she’d follow if walking in my shoes. Instead, she just loved me.
She said, “I don’t know what you’re feeling, but I want to. So no matter how tough this gets, I’m not leaving you.”
This is a special day for our family — it’s our oldest son’s birthday today. And I think of all the forms of love out there: romantic, friendship, family (because, this kid made me a Momma), sisterly & brotherly, in fellowship and community… Heavenly.
There are so many forms of LOVE out there that we are richly blessed. It’s that feeling when a friend says something like I’ll be here for you, or when we celebrate a child’s birth, or when we walk together, no matter the road, with someone in need.
I love LOVE. It’s beauty. It’s light. It’s heaven come down to kiss the earth. And on this special day in this week of love, whatever road you’re on, I pray you hear God’s voice whispering through the dark: “I’m not going anywhere.”
