Wednesday Wisdom – INSPIRE

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

—1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV)

The early days of my writing career tell the story of a journey much longer than it’s taken for published books to land on store shelves. This journey goes back almost two decades.

I sat at my downtown office, with a drawer full of tools, inspired by my work as a corporate writer but totally unfulfilled by the calling. I phoned my husband on my lunch hour and said: “I really love what I’m doing — but I’d give anything if I could do it for Jesus.”

There was an evening when the call on my heart could have withered on the vine. It could have died right there, with no books. No building up. No hope for wholeness in my heart.

I stood in the kitchen one evening after work. My husband held me while I cried.

The burden was so strong, yet I was unable to step out and follow it. We had responsibilities, after all. Three children. A stable career that had taken years for me to build. There’s no room for wild, reckless dream-chasing there. And in that moment of decision, my husband chose to build up rather than tear down.

His words: “Okay. You can quit your job. You can walk away and pursue your calling. I believe in you, and I trust in our God. So go get it. YOU’RE FREE TO DREAM.”

I put in my notice the next day.

Ladies, I make no claims that marriage is perfect. (In fact, I value the imperfect spaces more, because they remind us how much we need Christ.) But in that moment? In that building up and encouraging and letting go of what was holding me back? That was perfect love. Sacrificial, cheerleading, believing-in-you-no-matter-what kind of love. I wept when the burden lifted. And I was INSPIRED like never before.

Isn’t that what we do? Inspire others in the faith with believe-in-you-no-matter-what kind of building up that Jesus longs to use in us? I Thank you for being here, in this community. You build others up as you inspire me. Thank you for speaking words of grace. And forgiveness. Mercy. Hope. And inspiring me to keep chasing the One who Calls, even more than the calling itself.

Keep going. Dream a little today. And see what He can do with the spaces and faces who inspire you most.

Be inspired,

  1. Blessed moments those are. Thank you for sharing, and holding up a torch that reminds us ~ reminds me ~ that though the way forward is fogged in, the One Who Calls sees the path and will lead. Thanks, Kristy.
