For he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.
Then you will understand what is right and just
and fair—every good path.
—Proverbs 2:8-9 (NIV)
As parents, we’ll probably say we’d prefer to save our kids from making the same mistakes we did when we were young. I was having one of those heart-to-heart talks with our oldest son on the way to school one day. We talked about his upcoming teenage years (Gasp! Sob!) and I mentioned this — that I hoped to save him some of the mistakes I made. His response?
“Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll make all new ones!”
He said it tongue in cheek. And while I see his father’s witty in statements like that, there is some ultimate truth to it. Every path we have in this life is going to be determined by how we choose to walk it. Some outcomes are out of our control. Others, we have a direct hand in. But the how we respond is the key to walking in faith, no matter the path our shoes set upon.
I pray for our kids — and for ourselves — that we’re faithful when it’s hard to be so. That we have wisdom to understand when it’s hard to do so. That we value righteousness when it’s easier to go the other way.
For those of you embarking on a new path today, I thought of you this morning. For those of you starting a new job… For those stepping out to chase a dream for the first time… For those new parents, new grandparents, new students, new professionals out there… Maybe you’re starting out in a new life with a spouse (like my husband and I did 16 years ago this week!)… Whatever the journey, remember the HOW in the path.
Walk with faith. Walk with confidence. Walk every good path, and see where He takes you.
With Joy in the journey,
